5ths First Music Co. is built, owned, and operated by independent musician, songwriter, and mandolin player J. Carmichael. It is an education and instrument business based on a simple belief: music is simple. It becomes understandable when people are given a clear way to see, hear, and explore its patterns. Fifths tuning offers one clear doorway into that understanding, yet it is most often associated with expensive mandolin-family instruments and classical string instruments. After years of performing, touring, recording, producing, and teaching, I wrote 5th First String Theory to 1 share the approach that changed how I understand and teach the fretboard. In fifths tuning—CGDA—the same interval sits between every pair of strings, creating consistent, connected patterns for scales, chords, keys, melody, and harmony. Rather than treating theory as something to memorize, 5ths First helps players see, hear, and use those patterns on an instrument. My work is also shaped by teaching my own children. Kids are naturally curious about music when they can make a sound, recognize a pattern, and see an immediate connection between an idea and what their hands can do. That experience reinforced my belief that beginners deserve instruments and instruction that invite exploration rather than make music feel exclusive or intimidating. Fifths tuning is often presented as a specialized path for classical players or high-speed bluegrass mandolinists. 5ths First Music Co. exists to make it more accessible.
